Question
I have tried a few ways to solve this problem but nobody has been very helpful in helping me understand. So I am ging to try a new approach.
A beam in a building is held up by two, and only two colluns. I need to prove that the collumns will be able to hold the beam, and thus the roof of the building. I thought I could do this by finding the safety factor and showing tha it is high enough.
I know safety factor = Ultimate load/actual load
Right now I am trying to find what the ultimate load of the colluns are.
I know the Tensile yield strength is 345 MPa (50 ksi) and tensile ultimate strength 450 MPa (65 ksi) of the collumn.
The cross sectional area of the collumn I found to be, 8.109 in^2, which is also 0.20596 meters. It is an I beam that I calculated the cross sectional area for.
How do I find out the force that the two collumns can hold?
Can soemone work with me to help me understand the reasoning?
Thank you,
Explanation / Answer
Load allowed = (ultimate stress X area)/safety factor
Assume safety factor to be 1.5
Allowed load= 450X(0.20596X2)/1.5= 123.57X10^6 N
