Question

In your own words, describe how plants function to extract energy from the sun and their contribution to animals. In your answer, describe the major structures and their functional importance (roots, leaves, etc.) How do soil bacteria participate in the process? (10 points) Ashley and Ben have six children. Neither Ben nor Ashley have disorder X. Two of their children have the disorder (both are male). Draw the appropriate pedigree. (10 points) Designate alleles for each individual, indicating what each allele means. (5 points) Briefly discuss what type of inheritance pattern this is likely to be. Be sure to justify your answer, (10 points) 1. 2, 3. What is the difference between a gene and an allele? Provide a specific example. (10 4. If so, do you think there is one diet that should be recommended to everyone? What variables may affect this? (15 points) Research the chemical components of the air we breathe. Explanation / Answer

1. Plants derive energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis. Animals (herbivores and omnivores) directly feed on plants while as carnivores feed on other animals thereby depend on plants indirectly for energy sources.

3. A gene is a segment of a chromosome that produces a functional protein. Gene is a unit of heredity that organisms pass to their offsprings.

Gene is represented by many alternative forms, called alleles.

4. Twins are the offsprings produced from the same offspring. They may be identical (monozygotic) or fraternal (dizygotic).

Identical twins are nearly the same however they do not have the same fingerprints due to variation in their genomic sequences. As a result of differences in genomics, one may be susceptible to a disease while the other may be resistant to it.

5. A balanced diet is the consumption of different foods so as to get every essential macro and micronutrients, viz, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.

Usually, milk is referred to as a balanced diet as it contains every nutrient.

6. Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (20.94%), Argon (0.93%), Carbon dioxide (0.04%). Neon (0.0018%), Helium (0.0052%) and water vapour (0.001-5%).

Humans can't breathe in outer space be it mars, moon or any other planet except earth because of lack of oxygen.

7. a) Ionic bond is a chemical bond that is formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal so that both complete their octet.

b) Hydrogen bond a weak bond formed between two molecules due to electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other.

c) A covalent bond is formed between two molecules due to the sharing of electrons.

d) A recessive trait is a character that is suppressed

e) A dominant trait is a character that is expressed
