Question 1. An article has a value added tax of 15% imposed on it. If the marked price of the article is $64, then calculate the total amount a man has to pay if he wants to buy it?
Question 2. The original marked price of a video game is $45. During a special discount sale, the game price is reduced by 35% of the marked price. Then 15% of this reduced price is taken off at the cash register. What is the final price?
Question 3. A man is now 3 times as old as his son. In 10 years’ time, the sum of their ages will be 76. How old was the man when his son was born?
Question 4. A woman buys 50 eggs for $6.60, some costs 12 cents each and the rest 14 cents each. How many of each kind of eggs has she bought?
Explanation / Answer
1) Marked price = $64.
Tax = 15%
Tax amount = 64×15/100=9.6 $
Total amount=Tax+Marked Amount
=64+9.6
=$ 73.6
2) Original price of video game=$45
Discount percent=35%
Discount amount=45 ×35/100=$ 15.75
Reduced price = 45-15.75=$ 29.25
15% of this price is taken off at the cash register.
Final price=29.25 ×85/100=$ 24.8625
3)
Let age of man = x, and age of son = y.
Now man is 3 times old as his son, so it can be represented as x=3y (1)
After 10 years, the sum of age will be 76.
Thus we have (x+10)+(y+10)=76
That is, x+y=56 (2)
Solving eq 1 and eq 2, we have
y(son^' s age)=14 years,
x (father^' s age)=42 years
4)
Let number of eggs that costs 12 cents be x, and that which costs 14 cents be y.
So we have total eggs as 50 which can be represented as
x+y=50 (1)
Total cost is $6.6 which can be represented as
0.12 x+0.14 y=6.6 (2)
Solving eq 1 and 2, we get
y=30, x=20
i.e., she bought 20 eggs of 12 cents, and 30 eggs of 14 cents.
