Explanation / Answer
“The Story of Stuff" is an insightful 20 minutes facts about the material economy, its consequences and effects on the globe. This video is narrated by Annie Leonard. This video serves a guide to human endeavour rather than a mere philosophy , as it is is filled with scientific facts which explains the association between the environment, economy and social issue that is alive in our society. The society is striving on artificial creation of needs that has led to rise in consumption across the globe. The cost of production is socialised while the profit is privatised by the corporates. This has in turn led to excessive cutting, mining and exploiting of the Earth's natural resources, against the massive overconsumption by the population. This needs to be stopped. Concepts like Zero waste, renewable energy and buying everything that is produced locally can help decrease the harm done on enviroment and social structures. This message is based on scientific data and facts, as narrated by Annie Leonard . This is based on data rather than philosophy. The ecological limits should be inform the scale of human activities. Our obsession woth overconsumption is running against the limited resources of the planet. Excessive deforestation for urban living, mining for metals, excessive drilling of oil for transportation etc has disbalanced the demand supply ratio. Not only this, it has created a system of irreversible capitalism. For example, for producing a packet of tea, the plantation is established by the farmers in India ,its leaves are collected and picked by workers in India, packaged in Britain and sold as a 'Made in U.K' trademark. Indian who produce tea are used as cheap labourers who are undeaid, while the parent company in Britain enjoys the profit it earns from selling them. Overconsumption and our lack of knowledge about the products we consume has ecological and social consequences(capitalism).Last but not the least, one must understand that regeneration of ecosystem services is essential for sustainability. The primarily idea of the concept of ecosystemis is of its interdependency ie one organism's mututal reliance beneficiary relationship with another or the ecosystem as a whole. Concepts like biogeochemical cycling is a good example of this which uses energy as its primary component. The bacteria fixes the nitrogen gas available in the atmosphere which further is utilised by the cellular living organisms out of the energy from organic material. This in return strengthens the food chain at a base level, woth further influences the ecosystem at a higher level. Annie urges us to be well aware of our consumption habbit, its effects on us, environment and on social structureas a whole. The video is informational and adds to our sense of collective ethics and values towards the environment and its resources.
