Question

Students in BIO 290 wish to determine the percentage of students currently attending CCSU who have health insurance. Dr. Jarrett kindly allows the students to conduct their survey during a Tuesday afternoon class period and so the BIO 290 students stand at the center of campus near the waterfall and ask passers by if they are current CCSU students and do they have health insurance. Describe three problems with this sampling design that will prevent the BIO 290 students from getting a truly random sample.

Explanation / Answer

This is clearly convinient sampling process, where sample (CCSY students having health insurance) consists of individual (passers by) who are conviniently available. This sample is not representative of population as every individual in th epopulation is not equally convinient to the sample. This sampling process suffers from undercoverage and also response bias.
