1. The physical meaning of equivalent length of the compound pendulum is the length at which the pendulum swings freely. Here compound pendulum is a rigid body, so it free to swing with respect to the horizontal axis.
2. As you can see from figure 5. 2 , h is turned to zero, the point goes into the top end of the compound pendulum, at this point, compound pendulum can be converted into simple pendulum.
