Plan Reading 2990:150 Homework #1-Construction Mathematics 6. How much would the same basement floor weigh? Give your answer of kips in terms 7: How much would a ½"X 4"X 8' steel plate weigh? Give your answer in terms of pounds. How many students would be required to carry the plate if each student can carry 75 Ibs. 8. How many yards of concrete would be needed for a basement foundation wal that is 8° thick and 9' tall if the foundation is 20' x 20'? 9. For the above project how many concrete trucks would be required if each concrete truck has a capacity of 10 cy? 10. How many dump trucks of 12 ton capacity would be needed to remove the soil for a 1200 sf basement excavation assuming the an average depth of 5" Further assume that the soil weighs 120 Ib/ft.Explanation / Answer
10)
The volume to be removed = area* depth = 1200 * 5 ft * sq ft = 6000 cu ft;
Density = 120 lb / ft 3
So weight of 6000 cu ft would be = 120*6000 = 72*104 lb
72*104 lb would be = 72*104/2000 tonns = 360 tons
If capacity of 1 dump truck is 12 tons then for 360 tons a total of 360/12 = 30 dump trucks would be needed;
Thus, a total of 30 dump trucks would be needed to remve the soil
