Question

Please explain, I was absent the day we learned this :(

A university's financial aid office wants to know how much it can expect students to earn from summer employment. This information will be used to set the level of financial aid. The population contains 3200 students who have completed at least one year of study but have not yet graduated. The university will send a questionnaire to an SRS of 100 of these students, drawn from an alphabetized list. a) Describe how you will label the students in order to select the sample. Identify the unused labels also clearly. b) Use the following random numbers to illustrate the selection of the first 5 students in the SRS. (You need not draw all 100 students for the SRS) 12975 13298 13048 45144 72321 81940 00360 02428 96767 35964 23822 96012

Explanation / Answer

a) The sample will be drawn from the sample in an alphabetized list. Therefore, at first we will arrange all the 3200 students in an alphabetized order and put serial number 0001 for 1st order, 0002 for 2nd order, ....., 0010 for 10 order,....., 3200 for the 3200th order based on the alphabetized list of the students.

b) The selection of the first 5 students in the SRS using the following random numbers as follows. Here, I will consider the first 4 digits of the random numbers (you can consider the last 4 digit also).

The 4 digit of 1st random number is 1297, so select the student which in the 1297th serial number from (a) as a 1st observation.

4 digit of 2nd random number is 1329, so select the student which in the 1329th serial number from (a) as a 2nd observation,

4 digit of 3rd random number is 1304, so select the student which in the 1304th serial number from (a) as a 3rd observation,

the 4th, 5th and 6th  random numbers are greater than 3200, so do not consider these random numbers.

4 digit of 7th random number is 0003, so select the student which in the 0003rd serial number from (a) as a 4rd observation and

4 digit of 8th random number is 0242, so select the student which in the 0242th serial number from (a) as a 5rd observation.
