Question

Please answer following five (1-5) questions. A study performed on 42 people in response to a treatment, participants were randomized to 1 of 3 treatments.

1). whats the critical value for testing the null hypothesis of no difference in mean response between treatments?

2)as per your response from above, what can you conclude about the treatment means if the observed F statistic was F=3.57?

3)Based on the last question what can you conclude about the p-value for the testing the above? Choose one of the following

a. p>0.05

b p<0.05

c. p value cant be determined

d. value of the p depends on the level of significance.

4)If level of significance = 0.10, what can you conclude as far as testing no difference in mean treatment response in the above?

5)In the ANOVA table for the above testing of treatment means the mean square for treatment (MSB or MST) was 102. If we had blocked on prior history of the disease, how would this change the estimated MSB? Choose one of the following

a. No change in MSB

b. MSB would increase

c. MSB would decrease

d. Change in MSB would depend on whether the blocking variable is statistically significant.

Explanation / Answer

1) There are a total of 42 samples and 3 treatments/groups

Numerator df = No of treatments - 1

                        = 3-1 = 2

    denominator df = N - k where N = no samples, k = no of groups

                          = 42 - 3 = 39

Choose a significance level, alpha = .05 (default unless specified otherwise)

    So, critical F.05(2,39) = 3.24

2) We reject null when |Fstat|> Fcritical and since 3.57 > 3.24, reject null and conclude that there is significant

    difference in mean treatment responses.

3) Rejecting Ho implies p-value < alpha. Since test was performed at .05 level, p < .05

4) If a test is significant at alpha, it WILL ALWAYS ALSO BE SIGNIFICANT for ALL LEVELS > ALPHA.

.1 > .05, so null would be rejected and conclusion would remain same.

5) MSB won't change.
