Since I work for a small company, our system is not very complex, although it does have a biometric security component (a fingerprint is needed to login on the keypad). Our system is used to record applications and registrations for both the childcare and school components of the company. It contains basic information such as dob, address, parental and emergency contacts, allergies, etc. on each child enrolled at the facility. This system is tied into the login keypads enabling easy tracking for daily attendance. For persons who are unable to use the keypads to sign a child in, the office completes the sign in process so there accurate record of children in the daycare in case of an emergency. The children attending school are not logged into the building and are only tracked by teacher attendance rolls. Our system is also used to track employee attendance in both the school and daycare for payroll purposes. While the system we use is great for tracking the children of the daycare, I believe it is under utilized. In the light of so many school tragedies, I feel that our system should be expanded to include a sign in for children in the school setting. This way, if an emergency situation arises, a more accurate picture of the number of persons in the building can be given to first responders.

I think that it would make a lot of sense if the same biometric security system that has been providing great results for the tracking of children in the daycare facility, is utilized to mark the attendance of school students. The number of school tragedies has been on the rise in the US and it would be much easier to access the data regarding students from a central computerized system rather than daily attendance roll calls.
In schools, we also see that some students mark proxy attendance for their friends. It could lead to a lot of confusion in times of some unforeseen scenario regarding the whereabouts of those students. As the system has been working efficiently in the daycare facility, it would not be difficult to implement in a slightly more complex mix of a school.
