Question
Please help!!! Writing Assignment: Write a 300-350 word response to the following prompt. Use at least two quotes from the text in your discussion. (You may certainly quote more than twice.) Be sure to use quotation marks effectively and to cite the page numbers parenthetically after the quotes. (Do not use "p." or "pg." with page numbers.) Evaluate your response to this book. If you liked it, what aspects of the book pulled you in? Conversely, if you did not care for it, what aspects of the book put you off? It's also possible that this book is a "mixed bag" for you, in which case you can focus your discussion on both things that you liked about the book as well as those things that you did not care so much about. Regardless, you need to take into account the key questions (above). Your response to the book will somehow be tied to these concepts.Explanation / Answer
Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary.
(Answer) The book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is the first in a series of seven books written by J.K. Rowling. The novels follow the life of Harry Potter and his arch nemesis Voldemort. In the Philosopher’s Stone, we read the beginning of Harry’s journey. He is an orphan boy left at the doorstep of his aunt and uncle’s home. His aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and Cousin Dudley are absolutely terrible to this gangly boy who believes his parents have died in a car crash. It is only when the Dursley’s (Harry’s adoptive family) have to succumb to a humungous man named Hagrid, that they are forced to tell Harry who he really is. It turns out that Hagrid is the grounds-keeper at Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry. It is a school where both his parents met while they studied magic. The rest of Harry’s year is happy and a far cry from his time at the Dursley’s who were always in a terrible mood with him.
The book is very likable because of the adventures that Harry embarks upon with his friends. Harry makes friends with Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. Their first adventure in this book ends with them defeating Voldermort temporarily while he is in a feeble state. Harry had to incinerate Voldemort because he is a dangerous dark wizard who not only killed Harry’s parents but also a cohort of other people.
Throughout the story, Harry’s intrepid days at school are filled with characters, values and emotions that add depth to his story. Furthermore, stories where the protagonist overcomes the odds and persistently fights for good, despite their personal weakness, is always something that inspires the reader.
“To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.” (215) is something that Albus Dumbledore says. It is the kind of quote that encourages the reader to not take their problems too seriously. Considering the problems and worries that an individual might face in their lifetime, learning to not take a problem too seriously is a gift indeed.
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” (214) is also something that Dumbledore tells Harry when he spends too much time with the mirror-erised. It is also just as inspirational as it would teach one not to obsess too much over something that isn’t going to do anyone any good. Surely, this is a book that indirectly teaches children these values and also delivers on an entertaining adventure.
