Review the functions of the various gastrointestinal organs by matching the appropriate organ/anatomical component with its correct function. Then, click and arrange the organs/anatomical components in the correct order that a piece of food would encounter while traveling from the small intestine to the anus. Drag the text blocks below into their correct order. Large intestine A ring of smooth muscle between the last part of the small intestine and the first part of the large intestine. Relaxes to allow chyme to enter the large intestine Location of the digestion and absorption of most lleocecal sphincter substances, location where pancreatic and liver secretions enter the Gl tract, continues to mix and propel chyme forward. A ring of smooth muscle within the anus that must External anal sphincter relax to allow feces to be expelled from the body. A ring of skeletal muscle within the anus that must relax to allow feces to be expelled from the body. Small intestine Stores and concentrates undigested matter, site of salt and water absorption, continues to mix and propel contents forward, packs the rectum in preparation for defecation. Internal anal sphincter

Explanation / Answer

Mouth: The beginning of the GIT where chewing begins and swallowing is initiated.

Pharynx: serves as a passageway that is common to both air and ingested food.

Upper esophageal sphincter: a ring of skeletal muscle that relaxes during swallowing to allow bolus of food to continue forward in the GIT.

Esophagus: moves the bolus of food to stomach by peristaltic waves.

Lower esophageal sphincter: a ring of smooth muscle that relaxes to allow the bolus of food to enter stomach and quickly closes to reseal the junction between esophagus and stomach.

Stomach: location of the digestion and absorption of most substances, location where pancreatic and liver secretions enter GIT, continues to mix and propel chums forward.

Small intestine: stores, mixes, dissolves and continues the digestion of food, particularly of proteins.

Pylori sphincter: a ring of smooth muscle and connective tissue that helps to regulate how much chyme passes between the antrum and the duodenum.

Large intestine: stores and concentrates undigested matter, site of salt and water absorption, continues to mix and propel contents forward, packs the rectum in preparation for defecation.

Ileocecal sphincter: a ring of smooth muscle between the last part of small intestine and first part of large intestine. Relaxes to allow chyme to enter the large intestine.

Internal anal sphincter: a ring of smooth muscles within the anus that must relax to allow feces to be expelled from the body.

External anal sphincter: a ring of skeletal muscles within the anus that must relax to allow feces to be expelled from the body.
