Explanation / Answer
1. Explain the social and political situation of indigenous peoples in Australia. What should indigenes peoples in Australia do to realize self-determination?
Aboriginals can be defined as the people who belong to the 'aboriginal race of Australia'. These people are indigenous to either the island of Tasmania or mainland Australia. From DNA analysis, It has been found that the aboriginals are similar genetically most to the populations who were indigenous to Papua New Guinea and distantly to some of the groups related to East India giving an indication that Australia has been separated from Southeast Asia. These people were the first to inhabit Australia, but somehow now it is termed with non indigenous people.
The government has always favoured the non indigenous people. The aboriginals or the indigenous Australians get lower living, education, health, employment and housing standards . More significantly seen in the Report of the Royal Commission where aboriginal deaths in custody was mentioned. The government does not favour them, they don't get any extra funcdings, no additional income, rather are most socio-economically backward. The government has launched many programs so that indigenous needs could be met and to bring the aboriginals forward such as :
- Aboriginal Medical Services and Aboriginal Legal Services - which provides cost-free medical as well as legal services.
- The Indigenous Employment Programme - which provides financial assistance that is flexible so as to help in creating employment and training chances for the Indigenous individuals in private sector.
Self determination has been best observed but the Torres Strait Islander people.
2. What would be the practical effects on indigenous peoples and local and national governments when indigo peoples achieve self-determination in Latin American countries, US, and Canada? In other words, what would be the positives and negative when indigenous peoples become self-determining peoples
If the indigenous people achieve self determination, it would lead to self empowerment of the groups who had been on a major disadvantage and neglect in the countries all this while. This would impart some of the rights of equality to these communities. These equality rights would be imparted to the newer generations, who would learn how feelin now disadvantaged is.
