Abstract Infants differ substantially in their rates of language growth, and slow growth predicts latere academic difficulties. In this study we explored how the amount of speach directed to infants in spanish speaking families low in socioeconomic status influenced the development of children's skill in real time language processing and vocabulary learning. All day recordings of parent- infant interactions at home at revealed striking variability among families in how much speech caregivers addressed to their child. Infants who experienced more child- directed speech became more efficient in processing familiar words in real time and had larger expressive vocabularies by the age of 24 months, although speech simply overheard by the child was unrelated to vocabulary outcomes. Mediation analyses showed that the effect of child- directed speech on expressive vocabulary was explained bt infants' language -processing efficienccy, which suggests that richer language experience strenghtens processing skills that faciltate language growth.
Explanation / Answer
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of child-directed speech on expressive vocabulary. The variables undertaken in the study are- the usage of child directed speech (independent variable) and expressive vocabulary (dependent variable). The research design of employed in this study is exploratory in nature. The data was collected in the form of recordings of parent- infant interactions at home among Spanish speaking families. The results obtained in this study reveal that if caregivers use more child-directed speech when talking to a child, the child will be having better expressive vocabulary in comparison to those children who are not exposed to such type of situations. The results also indicated that the processing of familiar words and the breadth of expressive vocabulary is high among 24 months old infants whose caregivers indulge in more child-directed speech. The study seems to have implications in the form of making a policy document to create awareness among caregivers to use more child-directed speech in their interactions with infants. This will help infants to gain more knowledge and command over expressive as well as receptive language.
