19. Risky se-xual intercou-rse is a common behaviour that is observed in the adolescents of this generation. For these individuals, this age is when they think that all the choices they make are rational, but these rational choices, are not really what they think. The cognitive biases influencing these children are similar to that influencing the adults. According to Piaget's theory, adolescents are in a stage known as formal operations. In this state, the person is only able to think in abstract manners with hypothetical situations and draw conclusions on those hypothetical situations. Also, the adolescents are not cognitively immature. This is given by cognitive dissonance theory. By this, the adolescent somehow convinces himself that he won't be affected by these risky factors, even after knowing the dangers. This results in physiological tension within the individuals as he knows that his ideas won't be consistent with the results.
20. This increased risk taking occurs due to the phase that an individual goes through which is known as puberty, which has a major influence on a person's socio emotional state. The dopaminergic system of the brain, undergoes major changes in the presence of peers, that makes the individual go for an increased crave for seeking rewards, popularity, fame etc., or being termed as "cool". These changes mainly happen in the pre frontal cortex and are also in sync with the other regions of the brain. This vulnerability is highest during the mid adolescent period around 16-18 years of age.
