Question

IlII. Using the Koschmann video, address one of the following prompts: Koschmann recognizes that "organizational communication" is a unique kind of communication, and explains the traditional "flat earth" approach: communication within organizations, where the focus is on "types" or "modes" of communication that are peculiar to organizations, and that those types or modes are organized around the "shapes" or "containers" of the organization. Why is this view "reductive," "technical," or "instrumental" in his view? OR Koschmann argues that a better model for understanding how communication works in organizations: "organizations as communication." What does he mean by this? What is the basic thesis or idea in this model? What are the key features of the model? What problems in more traditional approaches to communication might this model solve? a. b. IV Locate and name the "round earth realities or "complexities" that require this more organic approach to organizational communication, according to Koschmann. Pick one of these

(Answer) (3a) Firstly, it is essential to understand that every organisation has their own personality. There are companies that are quite formal, some are traditional, some casual, linear, laid back etc. This “personality” is brought about by the management style, company motto, the type of business model, the actual business, the management, organisational structure etc. Koschmann refers to this “personality” that a company has, as a container and the style of communication would be the water that would take the shape of this container. In other words, the communication style is largely dependent on the personality of the organisation.

Communication is simply the passing of information from one individual to another. Therefore, if the information doesn’t get to the right plat at the right time, this misinformation is a “technical” issue. Koschmann views this as reductive because the way information is passed on to an individual within the organisation would depend on their position in the hierarchy of the company. Each individual is therefore like an instrument with their specific purpose in the machine that is the organisation.

The “round earth” approach suggests that communication is the organisation itself. Communication is the fundamental process that shapes the social reality of the business. This is a constitutive view of communication because communication literally constitutes the organisation. Through the “round earth” form of communication, there are no unseen edges, high or low areas and no assigned corners. There is only a round earth, which would mean that all communication is between individuals on a terrain that is equally spherical for all. For instance, the “knights at the round table” suggested that no knight sat at the head of the table and that all were equally valued. This approach administers equality and openness in communication that is to be carried out in a direct manner. This form of communication is to be similar with any level of the hierarchy.
