Assignment 3. Working Memory, Intelligence, and Brain Training Follow the steps below to complete Assignment 3: After reading Chapter 4 and Redick et al. (2012), and watching the Lecture Point: Working Memory and Intelligence, please write an essay (2-3 pages) in which you summarize your knowledge and thoughts about the relationship among working memory, intelligence, and "brain training." On your essay, you need to address the following points: · Is having a higher working memory span equivalent to having more intelligence? .What is the role of working memory in general intellectual abilities? Is training on tasks like the n-back task or on tasks as those in online programs like Lumosity or Cogmed likely to improve your working memory and/or intelligence? If not, what are they actually training? Is it possible to improve working memory and/or intelligence by means of some kind of training? If yes, what kind of training would that be? Step 2 - Submit your essay electronically on ICON (Assignments). See Course Schedule for submission deadlines.Explanation / Answer
There are various working memory models to analyse the thinking, resolution, intelligence and knowledge in a person. If a person has a higher working memory span then it is equivalent to having more intelligence. The intellectual capabilities increase the chances of enhancing the memory during training model studies. Survey and experiments revealed that intelligence scores were more after training as compared to before training depicted in the control groups. In pretest groups the score are much similar as compared to the scores after post test training. The role of memory is that it gets enhanced if a person receives an intelligence test training in the post-test period as compared to the pre-test period. There is a direct correlation between memory and training. Schweizer, Hampshire and Dalgleish in 2011 worked on the n-task with neutral, negative face stimuli in group of students. They used the method of Raven progressive matrix method which supported the result that the working memory of these people was considerably increased after memory training experiments. There was a control group, neutral training and affected training groups in which the memory potential was checked for further understanding of the intellectual capabilities. According to Roughan and Hardwin in 2011, received Cogmed training in which the intelligence Raven matrix scores were considerably improved after receiving intelligence training as compared to the ordinary results. The students who obtained training received better IQ scores as compared to the normal control group and normal IQ scores. There are various kinds of working memory tests which improve intelligence and IQ of students after successfully completing these tests. These include the working memory, visuospatial and Tower of london tasks to enhance the memory skills in a person. There are various 2-back and 3-back tests to improve memory and enhance intelligence skills in a group of students.
