Please answer the following two short answer essay questions (Two Paragrach each)
Question 1
The myelination of central and peripheral axons occurs rapidly through the first few years of life. How can this developmental process explain the improved motor abilities of infants and toddlers?
Question 2
Tetrodotoxin, puffer fish venom, blocks voltage-gated sodium channels. How would this effect the generation of the action potential? Fugu, puffer fish sushi, crafted by master sushi chefs, leave just enough of the toxin containing meat to cause numbness of the lips. Based on tetrodotoxin mechanism of action, why would it cause numbness of this lips?
Explanation / Answer
Mylein protects the neuron and helps to conduct impulse more efficentely, Myelination begins in the brain stem and cerebellum before birth. In the early stages brain creates more synapses than it needs, the excess synapse produced by the child brain in the first 3 years makes the brain responsive to the external input, durin this period brain can capture experience more efficently
Myelinated white matter plays an important role in brain messaging. In early childhood myelination occurs in the frontal lobe of brain, myelination helps in the cognitive development and helps to have better executive function .White matter maturation steadily increases throughout child hood, as the formation of myelin sheath around the neuron fastens neural impulse propogation, it increases the processing speed, the gain in processing speed improves working memory, which results in the benfits of intelligence
Tetrodotoxin is sodium channel blocker. Tetrodotoxin binds to the pores of voltage gated sodium channel in nerve cell membrane and prevents the passage of sodium ions, there by inhibiting the action potential and blocking the nerve transmission
Tetrodotoxin is a poison found in puffer fish, it interferes with transmision of impulse from nerves to muscle causing the numbness of the lips and tongue.
