5.   According to OSHA, why are young workers at greater risk of workplace injury than mature workers?

ANS: They are at risk because of their inexperience at work and their physical, cognitive, and emotional developmental characteristics. They often hesitate to ask questions and may fail to recognize workplace dangers.

6.   In what way does OSHA protect workers who complain about workplace safety in its Whistleblower Program?

ANS: Section 11(c) of the Act prohibits any person from discharging or in any manner discriminating against any employee because the employee has exercised rights under the Act.

7.   NIOSH has issued a statement on the safety of exposure to nanomaterials in the workplace. What approach does it suggest employers take?

ANS: Minimizing exposure to nanomaterials through the use of engineering and administrative controls and wearing personal protective equipment.

In 2007, which major toy manufacturer announced that they were recalling about 700,000 more toys that were made in China? Briefly explain the reason for the recall.

The recall covers 675,000 units of various Barbie accessory toys that were manufactured between Sept. 30, 2006, and Aug. 20, 2007. The action also involves 90,000 units of Geo Trax Locomotive Toys and 8,900 Big Big World 6-in-1 Bongo Band toys, both from the company's Fisher-Price brand. The Big Big World products were sold at retailers nationwide from July through August of this year, while the Geo Trax toys were sold from September 2006 through August of this year.

The announcement marks Mattel's third major recall of Chinese-made toys because of lead paint in a a month.

Mattel's last recall, announced on Aug. 14, covered about 19 million toys worldwide. They included Chinese-made toys that either had excessive amounts of lead paint or had small magnets that could easily be swallowed by children.

Delaware has a special employment situation regarding agricultural workers. Briefly explain this situation

Under a workers’ compensation system an employee is entitled to a guaranteed compensation for work-related injuries, regardless of fault. The amount of compensation is a set statutory amount. The employer pays for the cost of participating in the system through the payment of insurance premiums. Once the employment situation is in the system, the employee cannot bring any type of legal claim against the employer related to injuries sustained on the job.
