Question

Instructions Read the situation below and then write how you would react to the situation if you were using each of the common reactions to conflict. Morton Jenko has been with the San Angeles Police Department for the past 6 years. After graduating second in his class at the state police academy, Hunter was hired as a patrol person with San Angeles. He quickly moved up in the ranks to corporal in his second year and sergeant in his fourth. All of the officers considered Jenko to be the best cop on the force because of his high level of intelligence as well as his uncanny ability to work with the public by anticipating problems in the community. Everything was going along well for Sergeant Jenko until the spring of 2013. During this time, he started dating a girl that he quickly fell in love with. What he didn't know until 5 months after they began dating was that she had once been engaged to his captain. When Jenko's captain discovered the relationship, he was furious with Jenko but knew that legally he could not control the private life of his employees. However, even though he could not directly tell Jenko what to do, he decided to make his life miserable at work. Captain Webb constantly gave Jenko the worst assignments, kept him away from the public contact that made him such a good officer, and started to lower Jenko's performance evaluations. Jenko was frustrated at first, then hurt, and finally angry. He finally reached a point where one day he was so angry, that he had to do something. If Jenko were to apply each of the common reactions to conflict in this situation, what would he do in each case? Which of the reactions would be the most appropriate?

Explanation / Answer

“Win at All Costs would be most appropriate”

Withdrawal

Withdraw from the situation does not make sense; it could possibly a blunder for Jenko. In this situation, instead of withdrawing Jenko should face the situation properly so that his performance level keeps at a height and tackle those assignments in the most creative way so that his focus on the work should continue to rise.

Win at All Costs

Jenko should determine the possible methods to keep the work nature feasible and strong. The situation may be completely worst; he should not lose his focus on the work and continue to excel with success. While maintaining a relationship he should not distract from his professional career and try to focus on stability to maintain a balance by fulfilling the hard assignments and side by side maintain a balanced life.

Negotiation and Bargaining

These two words are absurd’s as it is not required in this case; Jenko should not negotiate or bargain to his captain as he is getting hard assignments. It is the part of the duty which is required to be undertaken by him, along with it is required to maintain a stable relationship with the girl. The situation in both ways is required to be fulfilled by Jenko.

Cooperative Problem Solving

Jenko can talk with professional words, about the task which is being assigned to him, he should say that task should be assigned by altering to other employees in the schedule instead of the regular hard task so that he can take a small break from the hectic schedule and can manage his livelihood.

Third-Party Interventions
Taking help from the third party is quite professional as several consultants will give the best possible idea to resolve the conflict and also will provide tricky guidelines to sustain a better relationship. Jenko can take help from the third party it would be beneficial for him.
