Explanation / Answer

1. Ronaldo expected that Hal staying as an employee will help him to

Overall Ronaldo expected that Hal will help him into running the business through a smooth handover of the ownership of the Garage.

2. The root causes of the current problem is that Ronaldo and Hal’s roles have not been defined officially. While Ronaldo is the owner of the shop, Hal is still the one who has all the control over employees, customers and the operation. Due to this, there is regular conflict in giving instructions and in leadership.

3. These current problems could have been reduced by having a formal discussion in terms of roles and responsibilities of Hal. The initial discussion of their share of responsibilities could have been between Ronaldo and Hal. After that the rest of the team (three employees and the apprentice) should have been informed about the take over and their respective responsibilities. Also a defined organization structure of reporting should have been implemented.

4. The best course of action for Ronaldo to take right now is to fire Hal. This will definitely reduce the conflicted leadership within the garage. Ronaldo could also decide to make peace with Hal and continue but considering that he is planning to change the name of the garage, which may not be good idea. Hal will not like to work for a garage that does not bear his name. As a result, the conflicts may escalate. Hence the safer option is to fire Hal and resume the control of the garage.
