Question

ASSIGNMENT Instructions

Computer Systems Course using Logicism.

I want you to assume that you are writing an instructional paper in which you must describe the processing and interdependencies of the following components of computer architecture. ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)

Instruction Decoder

Clock and Program Counter

Control Codes

Control Unit

Your paper must be informative and instructional it should rely upon and cite research but should be expressed in YOUR OWN WORDS.

The specifics of the paper include:

It must be at least 2 typewritten pages not including a title page and a page for works cited.

You must cite at least 3 references using APA format and list the sources in a Works Cited page. Information on APA formatting can be found on the OWL page which is a service of Purdue university at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Explanation / Answer

The Instruction Decoder : It reads the next instruction from memory, and sends the respective component pieces of the instruction to the necessary destinations.

For every machine-language instruction, the control unit produces a sequence of pulses on each control signal line that is required to implement that instruction (to fetch the next instruction)

The program counter (PC) or instruction pointer (IP) or instruction address register (IAR) the instruction counter or just part of the instruction sequencer is a processor register which indicates where a computer is in its program sequence.

In computing, a control character is a code point (a number) in a character set, that does not represent any written symbol. They are used for in-band signaling to cause effects other than addition of a symbol to the text. All other characters are printing, printable, or graphic characters, except for the "space" character.

Control unit (CU) is a component of computer's central processing unit (CPU). It directs operation of the processor. It tells the computer's memory, arithmetic/logic unit and input and output devices about how to respond to a program's instructions.
