SDN is Software-defined networking where the use of software to control and modify the network without the use of the physical involvement for the networking of the hardware and switches. Now, computers are connected in a network through which they communicate and share data and request and response happens in a computer network. Now, several operations are to be done to control and maintain a computer network. So network management mostly has to be done through physical hardware management where the hardware and switches are to be managed by the network.
SDN is meant for network management and this enables programming capabilities on an efficient network configuration where the use of SDN controls and improves the networking by centralizing the network intelligence and controlling one or more controllers from a central hub or control. SDN supports the dynamic configuration and responding quickly to the changing business requirements of today. Thus in SDN when the network or the requirements change, we don't have to touch the physical hardware or switches to shape the traffic from the centralized control and can change and deliver the services without much problem in the way such as what switches are connected and physical hardware connectivity.
It is certainly different from the current Network equipments which depend on connectivity through the physical hardware and have got no centralized approach and are thus a problem when the network changes or the business requirements change, then the hardware and switches are required. SDN is used in this case in network virtualization where the networks are controlled in a centralized way in a virtual connection through the programming capability which then again controls the hardware. Thus it is different from the existing network equipments in use currently.
Some of the major companies who are using SDN in their networking and technology and trying to implement the SDN in their networks are Cisco, HP and Juniper. These major companies are using SDN to be implemented in their networking and cloud products.
