3. (20 points) Considering the regulatory relationship between the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, ovaries, and uterus, describe 4 possible endocrine-related causes of infertility in females. In each case, make sure to explain what process would not occur in order to explain why it leads to infertility. Rely on Figure 28-24 in your textbook as a guide to the relationship between the reproductive hormones and the reproductive cycle in femalesExplanation / Answer
Hypothalamus is a structure of the diencephalon of the brain, this is located anterior as well as inferior to the thalamus. The structure performs both neural and endocrine functions, it produces and secretes hormones, and there are some hormones responsible for the female fertility and maturation. The pituitary gland related to the hypothalamus anatomically and functionally. It is a bean-sized organ which is suspended from it through a stem which is called the infundibulum or pituitary stalk. The hormones of Anterior Pituitary includes :
The possible causes of female infertility may be a pituitary tumor any disturbances in the pulsatile rhythms of FSH or LH production can lead to infertility and libido also and can too affect the normal menstrual cycle.
Endocrine system is responsible for the production, actions, and interactions of hormones. Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, thyroid gland, pancreas, ovaries, secrets hormones. Diseases related to any of these structures can cause infertility, the activities of all of the hormones are interconnected. The overproduction or any deficiency of any of the hormone can cause the inability of ovulation and causes infertility.
As in the case of hypothyroidism, the raised levels of prolactin (PRL) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) can affect levels of the sex hormones and may lead to infertility. Hypothyroidism can lead to failure of the thyroid gland, pituitary failure, or disorders of the hypothalamus.
In hypopituitarism or decreases level of pituitary gland leads to the deficiencies of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone which can leads to amenorrhea or we can also say absence of menstruation and infertility in female . Hypopituitarism can one of the reasons of TSH deficiency, which further causes hypothyroidism.
Elevated prolactin, decreases FSH and LH levels
