Question
The diagram shows ED patients at a local hospital emergency department. Please answer the following questions based on this value stream map. Most of the answers will be in minutes, so please just enter a whole number for your responses. When answering other questions please follow the instructions provided.
1. What is the cycle time of the process?
2. What is the throughput time of this process?
Assuming that the only value-added steps are the triage, nurse and exam/treatment steps, determine which numbers would go in each of the following parts of the percent value-added equation.
Numerator:
Denominator:
Admitting (insurance) Nurse (History) Exam/ Treatment Triage Emergency Department Patients Discharge 0 min 30 min 90 min 10 min 5 min 10 min 20 min 30.min 10-minExplanation / Answer
The cycle time of the process will be determined by the Bottleneck activity . Bottleneck activity is the one which takes maximum possible amount of time .. It is the intermediary weight between Nurse ( History) and Exam/ Treatment which has the maximum time of 90minutes and will therefore will be the bottleneck activity.
Hence , cycle time of the whole process will be 90 minutes / patient
Throughput time of all the process will be sum of all activities and intermediary weight periods
= 5 + 0 + 10 + 30 + 20 + 90 + 30 + 10 + 10 minutes
= 205 minutes
Following numbers will go into percentage value added equation :
NUMMERATOR = 5 + 20 + 30 = 55
DENOMINATOR = 5 + 10 + 30 + 20 + 90 + 30 + 10 + 10 = 205
NUMMERATOR = 5 + 20 + 30 = 55
DENOMINATOR = 5 + 10 + 30 + 20 + 90 + 30 + 10 + 10 = 205
