Question

Assume you are a Talent Management consultant and have been asked to attend a meeting at Google. The focus is on how the organization will Manage Employee and Team Learning of recently hired talent in its new Google Streaming Music Service to compete with Spotify and Pandora. You believe that an influential manager will be proposing that they use only traditional “learn on the job,” “nothing structured” approach to the training and development for this talent group. What would be your “business case” to help persuade the attendees that that would be a mistake? Include 5 most important elements to your business case. What specific training and development methods would you recommend instead of the “do-nothing” approach?

Explanation / Answer

My business case would include the following 5 main points to say that we need a structured approach to the employee group training:

1. The hiring has been done for a reason so they can't follow an unstructured method. Training period should serve that purpose.

2. The employees need to know where the company stands now in terms of the product and service offerings. Brief them on the current status.

3. The employees also need to know what the company has already done to overcome the challenge thrown by Spotify and Pandora. So provide them with product and market analysis data.

4. I would create content sharing platform wherein every employee in the group can share his idea and ask for the feedback from his manager.

5. Set up an introductory session with the employees who are already working on this project and conduct team building activities for easy integration into the company.
