Explanation / Answer
I was responsible for the vendor selection for a project,I selected a vendor, the vendor was supposed to provide us Gift items to be circulated to customers for retention. The same vendor remained a partner for over 2 years, and was increasing its rates as per the indutry norms and also provided discounts for loyal relationship. I and the immediate managers were happy with the partnership and never had any major issues for the quality and timely delivery, hence the continued partnership.
But once there was a new internal event introduced and we were asked to source similar items and provide vendors for similar gift items, so we forwarded the contact for the same to the CEOs office as they had asked for it. After some deliberation it was found that the vedor is not ready to provide the gifts, the vendor had many reservations and was not comfortable with the timelines.
At this point the CEOs office started questioning me, how have I been using such an unreasonable vendor. I was blasted that the rates and timelines are way more. I had to prepare a full report, the requirement , price mtching and prove that the decision was right.
I even had to show a market trend and show that the relationship these vendors entertain are separate and very much personnel driven. They might not give discount to new people who get on with them from the same company. After that I asked the vendor to come and meet in my presence with the other CEOs representative. I helped to close the deal, with slighlty better terms, though the timelines were relaxed the discounts. Once I was able to crack this deal I was not blamed anymore, but till these 3 days I was seen as a corrupt manager.
The best thing to do in any such case is
