Refer to picture below. In this ride, a person rides on a mat down a tube from point A that drops about 35 ft. in the vertical direction. The rider then proceeds to travel up the other side of the funnel about 30 ft. vertically to point C. Pretend an 80kg person was on this ride.

A.) Determine the amount of mechanical energy lost to friction on their trip down the tube and back up the other side.

B.) Estimate the speed of the rider when they first cross the bottom of the funnel point B. List your assumptions.

Explanation / Answer

A) Difference in heght = (35-30) = 5 ft = 1.524m

This difference is caused by the lost energy

Lost energy = m*g*delta(h) = 80*9.81*1.524 = 1196 Joules

B) Now we can make approximation that half of the energy is lost in the left part

So,

KE at B = PE at A - (1196/2)

= (80*9.81*10.66) - 598

= 7767.9 Joules

KE = 0.5*m*v^2

V = sqrt(7767.9 / 0.5*80) =13.93 m/sec
