You've been working for your division manager for several weeks and you are starting to learn his style of leadership and preferences. One day he comes in and displays nervousness, edginess, and is argumentative. The next day he returned to his normal calm and relaxed style. Does this behavior show us that personality traits are not consistent from day to day? Explain and support your position.

Explanation / Answer

No, Traits are consistent over a longer period of time

The boss’s usual traits are being calm and relaxed. The boss is just experiencing emotional or mood variation on that particular day.

The boss shows a relaxed style on most of the days. Due to unpleasant circumstances or internal difficulties, he is experiencing a bad mood state.

Is it emotion or mood? Since the whole day the boss is nervous, he is probably in a negative mood state. Emotions are usually short-lived, but moods may last for days

Note

Moods are feelings less intense than emotions but are not directed at any object and last longer. Emotions and moods are feelings, not traits

The trait is like climate. Moods are like seasons: emotions are the weather.

E.g. for emotion and mood

Note how emotions get to converted to moods
