Comment this discussion in few paragraph ?
What are the group decision-making processes and structures in place at your current or with a previous employer that were designed to eliminate bias, create structure, and cultivate consistently better decisions?
As a project manager, risk mitigation was a daily occurrence in my previous role. While it was my responsibility to generate solutions, the final plan was determined by a group. To ensure decisions were made without bias, documentation was required to support all options.
Collaborative decision making was the structure used to ensure better decisions. This method tends to encourage team member participation. The team was able to reach consensus quickly. This method limits dissention and leads to high quality decision making (Taylor, Pasmore, 2017). The risk management plans reflected the best options.
Were the processes successful? Why, or why not?
This process was very effective. The risk management plan must be approved by team members and the sponsor. Prior to approval, a presentation was required to explain the solutions. Team members were very supportive. When solutions were implemented, they were able to explain and even defend the plan if required.
How may the structure have facilitated organizational skewing?
Team members were subjected to truthiness a term that describes a preference for one solution to be selected (Redman, 2017). Since all team members had the ability to offer solutions or add to existing solutions, the opportunity to influence a preference was available. This phenomenon can also be referred to as confirmation bias (Redman, 2017). The team members could support the data supporting their solution and dismiss any information that does not.
Typically, the risk mitigation plan has a short timeline. This may cause the team to fall prey to the confirmation bias. This can be avoided by vetting the solution thoroughly, making sure the correct subject matter experts are included, and work to expose any flawed decision- making processes (Redman, 2017).
Explanation / Answer
Having a structured decision making process is important in any organisation. In order to mitigate rates of a business it is important that the employees of the risk mitigation team come together and have a discussion on the same.Collaborative Decision making is one of the major used decision making process in an organisation which helps in employees to be creative and contribute to the decision making process. After a discussion the team arrives at the common conclusion which would be the final decision for a particular situation.
But there are various barriers in his decision making process which involved confirmation bias, anchoring, Halo effect and overconfidence bias. The discussion mainly focuses on confirmation bias where the decision maker seeks out other evidence or report that confirms with his decision.
The final decision of the risk management plan for which the discussion took place will have to be presented in front of higher authorities and the employee must be able to defend his decision and support that decision with appropriate reports.
