Influenced by initial impressions
I think being influenced by initial impressions is one of the key issues with the hiring process where I work (DFL). Initial impressions can be very misleading because people are often on their best behavior and may be presenting themselves in a way that they think their employers want them to be seen. For example, in an earlier post in this course, I mentioned a co-worker of mine, Gina. I’ve no doubt that during her interview she presented as a hardworking and organized counselor that already has experience under her belt. Couple the experience with how she presented at an interview and our hiring team was misled but did not get the worker they were expecting in the long run. Vetting potential new hires by inquiring about their performance at their previous workplace can help in reducing influence of first impressions. If a person has good credibility with prior employers, which is the quality of being trusted and believed in, then it may bode well for their future at DFL.
Seeing what you want to see
This pitfall in my opinion goes hand in hand with being influenced by first impressions. In my field and jobs with DCF as a whole, the turnover rate is very high. That being said, the likelihood increases that a company or hiring team will get desperate for qualified employees and possibly overlook some glaringly obvious red flags when evaluating potential new hires. Though I can’t say this for certain in Gina’s case, it is very possible. I would change this process by having an objective manager take part in the interviewing process. Usually, when counselors are interviewing for the job, they’re being interviewed by fellow counselor supervisors. Having a higher up or someone with a different role help conduct the interviews could help keep clinical supervisors from feeling the pressure or need to hire just anyone, and thoroughly consider each applicant.

Explanation / Answer
First impression is always very important whether it is an interview or a business meeting or a networking event. If we see it is a human tendency to make judgement about others on how they have reacted, or it could be subconscious act. There are several instances to it, such as – whether we like the person or share our feelings or to show friendliness. This happens in many times if the person is extrovert in nature and have conversation with good eye contact and make other feel comfortable to continue the conversation with them but may go other end with introvert person. So, in this situation ‘likeability’ matters for the initial impression. Other example could be of person to trust with no bias. We get influenced by powerful people and this could be both position wise and personally. And this is totally how we perceive others due to their status or professionalism etc. Finally, in most of the cases appearance matters a lot and get influenced while making first impression. Therefore, it has been shown in researches that the first impressions are always affected by nonverbal communication and moreover by body language.
