The Power of Groups
“Teams are particularly effective in problem solving as they are comprised of people with complementary skills” (Lafferty, J.T. 1988). For this assignment I am going to explain the decision process in regards to an event that occurred on my previous job. The company was having problems with logistics which is the process to deliver finished goods to multiple customers by choosing optimal shipping routes and methods. The complementary skills allow team members to examine issues from different perspectives and different angles. To resolve the problem effectively all the staff of the company got together in order to share ideas on how to improve the logistics department following step-by-step which are the following:
First of all, recognized the problem. In the meting we explained the situation to all the staff of the company. We all concluded and recognize that a problem exists and that a decision needs to be made to move forward. As a group we can bring a solution for the company. Second, defining a problem. During the meeting all the staff of the company explored different ways of viewing the problem. Third, develop alternative solutions. Having a list of PRO and CONS as a group we decided the best solution. For example, one PRO is that the company is using a very good carrier meaning that the trucks we deliver finished goods to multiple customers is from a good quality. Another example, a CONS is that the company is facing is a poor communication between us and the driver because sometimes they delivered to the wrong address. Finally, we came with the best choices to changes and we implied those changes to the company.
Weeks after the implementation, I witnessed a major improvement in the logistics process because customers were satisfied about the timely deliveries, and the good conditions in which the products arrived.
Explanation / Answer
These days the management are more focussed in having the diversified team that is people from the different background which will bring in the new ideas, creativity and innovation not only in technologies but also in a way a particular task could be better perform. Generally diversified team has different thoughts and ways of approach towards a situation and having so many different experiences on board is added advantage.
If the company include the team members in decision making process that itself start to create a organizational culture which promote open communication and indulge each member as a part of decision making process which motivates them and have a tendency to explore in each dimension which may be very important to grab.
Team efforts when align to organizational interest will bring the desires results within a time. Like in a given situation when all of them brought to open communication on how to do better supply chain problems, entire team efforts and suggestions worked out in favour of the Company.
