How many machines should be purchased to meet the upcoming year's demand without resorting to any short-term capacity solutions? The number of additional machines required is(Enter your response rounded up to the next whole number.)

Explanation / Answer

8 more machines would be required.

Explaination -

currently there are 4 machines - 2 machines each shift would be used - 1 for kites and 1 for socks each shift

kites production takes 3 hours set up time

.3 hours processing time would give 43 units in a day and around 7800 units in a year.

The demand forecast for kite is 32000 which is around 4 times of the current production. Means number of machines needs to be 4 times of the current units which is 2.. means 8 machines more required.

Socks - with same calculation 78 units of sock can be produced each day with the current setup and 14000 a year. 1000 short of the demand forecast and buffer 25% would mean we can stick to the same number of machines as per the current setup.

Hence 8 more machines are required.
