Question
Clarisse is a food and beverage manager for a large metropolitan hotel and supervises thirty kitchen employees. Friday night was extremely busy and she spent much of her time in the dining room overseeing meal service. After dinner was completed, Amy and Eric, the line cooks, informed Clarisse that Rick (the sous chef) was having some difficulties during preparation. They both observed Rick drinking on the job and indicated he had a bottle of vodka stored under the cabinet in the kitchen. Clarisse proceeded to the kitchen and found Rick leaning against the cabinet. She decided to speak with him. However, she detected no odor of alcohol on his breath. He was, however, chewing gum, his speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy, and his comments and explanations ranged from inconsistent to incoherent. He was swaying and losing his balance during the entire conversation. When Clarisse opened the cabinet, she found an empty bottle of vodka. When confronted by Clarisse, Rick denied any drinking. Clarisse was very upset and terminated him immediately for “intoxication on the job.”
Do you agree with Clarisse’s decision? Why or why not?
What would you do?
Explanation / Answer
I don’t agree with Clarisse’s decision because there was no evidence that rick was under alcohol consumption and also there might other story related to it. Clarisse’s approach of immediate termination was wrong. She should have given Rick time to explain as to why he was behaving in such a way and how come a empty Vodka bottle was lying there and whether he really consumed it or some other intoxicating substance.
I would have told Rick to leave and gathered other information and witness and given the Rick the showcase notice as to why he shall not be terminated. Setup an enquiry and if found guilty, I would have given him notice to leave.
