Explanation / Answer

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) -------> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)

2 mol of sodium reacts give 1 mol of H2

Molar mass of Na = 22.99g

No of mol in 33.5 g = mass/molar mass

= 33.5g/22.9g

= 1.4572 mol

No of mol of H2 given by1.4572 mol of Na=1.4572/2= 0.7286

Ideal gas equation is

PV = nRT

P = nRT/V

P= pressure

R = gas constant , 0.082057 (Lit atm/mol K)

V = volume , 3.5 L

T= 21°C =294.15K

n = no of mol , 0.7286

Substituting the values

P = (0.7286 × 0.082057( L atm / mol K ) × 294.15 K)/3.5 L

= 5.02 atm

So, pressure exerted by the gas is 5.02 atm
