The figure shown below describes a junior manufacturer of ethyl alcohol (Et0H) in a steady state continues process (separating at high temperature) which produces 20% of the feed (F) as a product (P) Given that the ratio of ethanol mass fraction in the vapor stream to that in the waste stream is 1.5, a) carry out degree of freedom analysis on the overall process b) write and simple the general balance equation for the process c) Calculate all unknowns in the process, if possible, Show the sequence of your solution using the D.O.F analysis on each selected unit. Solution:
The computation are expressed below,
(a) Degree of freedom = C - P + 2
= 2 - 2 + 2 = 2
(b) As per degree of freedom two equations are required,
0.3 EtOH + 0.7 H2O = Vapor stream
0.6 EtOH + 0.4 H2O = Recycle stream
(c) D.O.F for the reaction scheme is,
EtOH contains C,H,O and Water contains H, O
DoF = 2 - 3 (C,H,O) + 1 (selectivity) = 0
