Part A. Typical Reactions of the Group III ions (1) Ammonia and Hydroxide Ion Complexes In the spaces provided, write the formulas of the precipitates formed, or new ions formed in solution, if any. Also indicate any characteristic colors and the like that result when each ion is treated with the reagent in the left-hand column. Reagent Al3* Zn2 6 M NH 6 MNH, (excess) 6 M NaOH 6 M NaOH (excess) (2) Red Lake Formation with Al(OH)3 Equation for the reaction of Al3 with NH Briefly, explain how excess of HCl, then a slight excess of NH, ensures that the solution will not become too basic to form a satisfactory adsorption compound of the dye with the precipitate the addition, first, of an

Explanation / Answer

fe(3) ion reacts with NH3 to give reddish brown precipitate and with addition of excess NH3 the ppt remains insoluble. for NaOH also we get a red ppt and excess addition doesnot bring any change, the ppt remains insoluble

Al (3) ion reacts with NH4OH reacts in similar way to give white Al(OH)3 as ppt which persists even upon excess addition of NH3 . on addition of NaOH white ppt is formed but with excess addition it becomes soluble.

Zn (2) ion interacts with ammonia to give white ppt which upon excess addition of NH3 forms soluble tetra amine zinc complex. with NaOH also white ppt is formed but excess addition of NaOH leads to solublization.

Aluminum ion detection is done by the red lake formation using aluminium hydroxide. the addition is done in buffer solution as addition of excess acid will lead to formation of orange colour protonated aluminon. addition of few drops of NH3 leads to formation of a red coloured gel like solution.pH has to be maintained betweem 6-7 else the colour will be orange and no formation of gel will occur
