Discussion various IR spectra measured including that of is provided on the following page; discuss the Compare the chlorodifluoromethane which differences and similar the studied ive potential contribution of each of and ities. Discuss the relati gases on a per molecule basis. Discuss the relative importanc contribution of each of the gases to the overall greenhouse etfect. 50% or ligner dtcny cont route transmittand Questions Based on class discussions, what are the three most important greenhouse gases? Why are these so important? Wh at are some possible consequences of global warming? (be brief!) For any CFC or HCFC used, give the chemical name as well as the CFC omenclature. Comment on both their greenhouse potential and their ozone- pleting potential.Explanation / Answer
1) The 3 major greenhouse gases are: carbondioxide (CO2), methane CH4 and nitrous oxide N2O.
In addition halocarbons like chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFCs) are also greenhouse gases.
These are important because, these gases when present in the atmosphere not only abosrb the radiation from the sun but also direct some of it back to earth thereby warming up th planet.
2) As the temperature of the planet increases, the possible consequences would be:
a) Melting of polar ice caps
b) Rising sea levels
c) Increase in occean temperatures
d) disruption of the acquatic ecosystem
e) change in weather patterns
3)
a) CFC-12 chemical formula: CCl2F2
b) CFC-113 chemical formula C2Cl3F3
c) HCHC-142b chemical formula C2H3F2Cl
