Question
IIL. PROCEDURE Disposal and Cleanup: I. Dispose of the lodoform mixtures in the Halogenated Waste jar Tollen's Test Perform the Tollen's Test on the two remaining unknowns a) Prepare the Tollen's reagent as follows For each of the two unknowns, place l mL of 1% silver nitrate (AgNO) solution into a small test tube 2 Add tube A brownish precipitate should form at this point mL of 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to the silver nitrate in the test 3. To the precipitate, add 6 M ammonia (NHs or NH.OH) solution one drop at a time, shake vigorously after the addition of each drop Continue to add the NHs solution until the brownish precipitate dissolves b) Add the Tollen's reagent to the unknown 4. Place 2 ml of one of the unknowns that is to be tested into a large test tube 5. Add the Tollen's reagent that you have just prepared (steps 1-3) to the unknown in the large test tube and then place the test tube into a boiling water bath for five or ten minutes 6. Repeat the above procedure with the other unknown The aldehyde unknown forms a silver mirror. The silver mirror must now be washed from the tube! See below for the instructor's assistance Disposal and Cleanup: 1. Dispose of the contents of these tubes into the jar labeled Tollen's Test Waste 2. Now bring the test tubes to your instructor who will complete the cleaning by adding some nitric acid to the tubes; the acid will dissolve what remains of the silver mirror. It is essential that the test tubes be cleaned immediately after use as an explosive silver compound (silver fulminate) may form if the reaction mixture is allowed to sit indefinitelyExplanation / Answer
2,4 dinitro phenyl hydarazine test is answered by both aldeyhdes and ketones. Iodoform test are given by methyl ketones whereas Tollen's reagent test is answered only by aldehydes.
