Question

If you were to place 25g of aluminum hydroxide into 500mL of water: a.) What should you expect the final concentration of aluminum to be? b.) What should you expect the final concentration of hydroxide to be? C.) If you added sodium hydroxide, which is very soluble, what would happen to the aluminum concentration- increase, decrease or remain the same? d.) If you added hydrochloric acid to the solution, which is also highly soluble, would the aluminum concentration increase, decrease or remain the same? Please put your answer in the format 1.2x10A-3 Blank 2: Blank 3: Blank 4:

Explanation / Answer

A. Concentration or Molarity = 25x 1000/78x 500= 6.41x 10-1 M.

B. Aluminum hydroxide splits into Al+3 & 3 OH- ions in water. Hence hydroxide concentration is 3 x 6.41 x 10-1 M.

C. Concentration of Al decreases due to common ion effect of OH-

D. Remains same, only hydroxide will reacts with H+ ions of HCl (Neutralization).
