Question

Problem 18.49

I can't figure out how to solve this problem. I have the answer to part A because our teacher gave us the answer but I don't understand how to get the other answers to the other parts.

Part A

How much charge does a 17 V battery have to supply to fully charge a 2.6 F capacitor and a 5.4 F capacitor when they’re in parallel?

Part B

How much energy does the battery have to supply in this case?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units

Part C

How much charge does a 17 V battery have to supply to fully charge a 2.6 F capacitor and a 5.4 F capacitor when they’re in series?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Part D

How much energy does the battery have to supply in this case?

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Q = 140 C

Explanation / Answer

A) when capcitors are in parallel connection then ,

Ceq = 2.6 + 5.4 = 8 uF

Q = Ceq V = 8 x 10^-6 x 17 = 136 x 10^-6 C = 136 uC

B) Energy = Q^2 / 2C = (136 x 10^-6)^2 / 2( 8 x 10^-6 )

     = 1.156 x 10^-3 J

C) when they are series then ,

1 / Ceq = 1/2.6 + 1/5.4

Ceq =1.76 uF

Q = Ceq V = 1.76 x 17 = 29.84 uC

D) Q1 = Q2 = 29.84 uC
