Question

Please make sure answers are correct

1. What is the oxidation number of potassium in K2S04 (aq) How many grams of oxygen must be supplied to completely burn 2 moles of acetylene according to the following balanced combustion reaction? 2. 2C2H2 + 502 4CO2 + 2H2O 3. When 15 grams of zinc oxide (81.41 g/mol) react with 12 grams of hydrochloric acid according to the following balanced chemical equation, what is the limiting reagent and how many grams of ZnCl2 is been produced? ZnO + 2HCl ZnCl2+ H2O 4. Consider the redox equation, 2voiHaq) + SO2(g) + 8H-(aq) 2V0%(aq) + SO42-(aq) + 4H20( The oxidizing agent is

Explanation / Answer

1. oxidation number of potassium in K2SO4 is 1 . because K is alkali metal and we know that all alkali metals have +1 oxidation state .

2 2C2H2 + 5O2-------> 4CO2 + 2H2O

according to reaction 5 mole of O2 is consumed. 1 mole of O2 having 32g mass so 5 mole contain 5*32=160g

3. ZnO + 2HCl------> ZnCl2 + H2O

according to reaction 1 mol of ZnO is reacting with 2 mole of HCl

now, mole of ZnO = 15/81.41=0.18425

mole of HCl = 12/35.5 =0.3380

according to reaction mole of zinc oxide must be half of the HCl.

0.3380/2=0.1690 mole which is less . so HCl is limiting reagent

4. from the above reaction VO4(3-) is oxidising agent . because its oxidation number(vanadium) decreases from +5 to 0
