Question
Calcium oxide reacts with water in a combination reaction toproduce calcium hydroxide: CaO (s) + H2O (l) -->Ca(OH)2 (s) In a particular experiment, a 5.00-g sample of CaO is reactedwith excess water and 6.11 g of Ca(OH)2is recovered. What is the percent yield in thisexperiment? Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thecorrect answer ends up being 92.4. I've done this problem dozens oftimes and I do not get that answer, I checked with a student in myclass and they said that is the correct answer so I am not surewhat I am doing wrong. I always rate answers. Thanks :) Calcium oxide reacts with water in a combination reaction toproduce calcium hydroxide: CaO (s) + H2O (l) -->Ca(OH)2 (s) In a particular experiment, a 5.00-g sample of CaO is reactedwith excess water and 6.11 g of Ca(OH)2is recovered. 5g of CaO times 1mol/56g CaO gives you .o893mols of CaO. Then looking at the equation 1 mol of CaO gives 1 mole of Ca(OH)2 so .0893mols of CaO gives .0893 mols of Ca(OH)2. .0893 times 74g/1mol gives 6.607g of Ca(OH)2. % yeild is actual over theretical so 6.11g/6.607 times 100 gives you your answer.
