Question
Consider the apparatus shown in the drawing. (click the below link to see the apparatus)http://session.masteringchemistry.com/problemAsset/1100042/2/BLB.ch10.p059.jpg
(a) When the stopcock between the two containers is opened and the gases allowed to mix, how does the volume occupied by the N2 gas change? What is the partial pressure of N2 after mixing?
(b) How does the volume of the O2 gas change when the gases mix? What is the partial pressure
of O2 in the mixture?
(c) What is the total pressure in the container after the gases mix?
Please I need help and thanks to anyone for helping me.
Explanation / Answer
A)------------------------------------------------------
The volume increased from 2.0L to 5.0 L
The partial pressure of the N2 is 0.40 atm.
B)------------------------------------------------------
The volume of the O2 gas increased from 3.0 L to 5.0 L.
The partial pressure of the O2 is 1.2 atm.
C)------------------------------------------------------
The final pressure is the sum of the partial pressures, 0.40 atm + 1.2 atm = 1.6 atm.
The final pressure is 1.6 atm.
I tried to write the equations but the editor wasn't working correctly.
