30. In week 7 topics you learned that genetic reassortment is a mechanism by which new influenza virus subtypes are produced.

Using a virus with an a three-segmented RNA genome as an example, describe and illustrate this process and include an example of genetic reassortment that resulted in a major change in the genome (antigenic shift ) creating a new influenza A subtype.

Show all possible outcomes.

If you copy/paste an illustration you must describe in detail what it shows and how it supports your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

The phenomenon of Antigenic shift can occur only in case of segmented genomes.A three-segmented RNA genome has its entire genome distributed into 3 segments.

Let us take an example of a virus with an a three-segmented RNA genome say an influenza virus.Suppose this influenza virus undergoes genetic reassortment with another different strain of influenza virus. From this two different strains of influenza virus genomes independent segments of RNA reassort to give rise to a recombinant virus with a new antigenic subtype. This results in a drastic sudden change in the surface antigens of the virus. The new genetically recombinant virus generated is actually a new influeza A subtype. This new subtype results in pandemic outbreak.
