Question

Please detail the route of a glucose molecule in metabolism.....

Explanation / Answer

Glucose first goes through glycolysis --->forms pyruvate Pyruvate is converted to acetyl coA which goes through the Krebs cycle to give different intermediates like NADH, FADH2, GTP. These intermediates go through the electron transport chain where they reduce oxygen to give water. In the process they form ATP through the enzyme ATP synthase. NADH gives 3 ATP while FADH2 gives 2 ATP. Aerobical respiration gives about 36-38 ATP totally. Anaerobic respiration or fermentation gives only 2 ATP as glucose only goes through glycolysis but not the rest of the pathways. As glycolysis can occur both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, this gives 2 ATP.
