follow this a) You fail to adjust the temperature of the acid and base to the same temperature before mixing them. usually you are provided with pre-made soltuions of HCl & NaOH which have equilibrated to the same temp. if so,...this should have dH = "no effect" if you made your own NaOH solution, it would have a much higher temp than the HCl. if you have the thermometer in the NaOH to monitor the dT, it will not rise as high as it should, for it will be partially cooled by the colder HCl giving a dH = "too small" if you made your own NaOH solution, it would have a much higher temp than the HCl. if you have the thermometer in the HCl to monitor the dT, it will rise higher than it should, for it will be partially heated ed by the hotter NaOH giving a dH = "too large" ======================================
