Question

Problem 7.40 A sample of argon gas has a volume of 775mL at a pressure of 1.38atm and a temperature of 128 degree C. What is the final volume of the gas, in milliliters, when the pressure and temperature of the gas sample are changed to the following, if the amount of gas does not change? Part A 640mmHg and 327K Express your answer using three significant figures. V1 = mL Part B 0.55atm and 85 degree C Express your answer using two significant figures. V2= mL Part C 16.6atm and -14 degree C Express your answer using three significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

We know the formula

P1V1 / T1 = P2V2 /T2

where P1 = 1.38 ; V1 = 775ml ; T1 = 128 = 401K

P2 = 640mm = 0.842K ; T2 = 327 K

by keeping all values in above equation

V2 = 1035.79 ml

at 0.55atm and T2 = 85 C = 358K

V2 = 1736.02 mL

at 16.6 atm and -14*C = 259K

therefore V2 = 41.61mL
