Question
Confused about naming beneze with IUPAC rules, are there priorities? if so what are they and what is the correct way to name? ive looked online quite a bit and i dont find any definitive asnwers. I dont understand the rules in how something is named 3-bromo-phenol but then when it comes to naming a ring that has substituents such as 1-oh 2 methyl 5 chloro why its called 4 chloro-2-hydroxytoluene i thought phenol was higher priority than toluene. This is my last question of the month as ive run out so please be helpful :(
Explanation / Answer
when compared with --OH group --CH3 group is more electron donating. if we take Cl at 5 carbon in Benzene which is meta to --OH group but --OH is not a meta directing group.if we take consider Cl with with respect to --CH3 group, its posotion is satisfied. so we can --CH3 as major group.
