Question
Polar covalent vs Non polar covalent bond.
From the book and other explanations from websites; its been stated that nonpolar covalent bonds are bonds with the electrons shared equally between the two atoms whilst polar covalent bonds are unequally shared pair of bonding electrons.
I do not know what exactly it is meant by "unequally shared pair of bonding electrons".
as an example, C-Cl bond is given as an example for polar covalent. however, I still don't see the "unequally shared pair of bonding electrons" since one lone, unpaired electron from carbon bonds with another lone, unpaired electron from chlorine.
Could someone please explain it clearly so that even elementary kid could understand it? lol
Explanation / Answer
See, equal means if suppose there are 100% to share, 50% are shared by each.
But unequal means that suppose 80% is shared by one and 20% is shared by another.
So, let us take the example of C-Cl. Cl is more electronegative atom means its attracts more the shared pair of electrons. This means that initially there was a share of 50%, now it attracts more to get 80%share. The rest 20% is shared by C. This is called unequal sharing.
Hope you understand it now.
